Meet The New Faces at Carlyle, and Bid Farewell to a Long-Time Friend
After 42 Years of Service Carlyle is Saying Goodbye to Mr. Paul Tollar
Paul sends his regards in the following letter, "I can't believe the time has finally arrived, but, after 42 years at Carlyle / Carrier, it's time for a career change: retirement. I've seen a lot of changes over the years and so it's time for the next big one for me. I will miss the challenging work and especially all of you who I've enjoyed working with over the years.
When I started in 1965 we only had reciprocating compressor products: 06D&E, 5F&H and our old hermetic models. And, I've learned a lot over the years on how to apply these compressors. The old saying was: "Be good to your compressor and it will reciprocate!" Then we developed and introduced the new compressor technologies: rotary, scroll and then screw compressors. It resulted in new challenges in learning how to properly apply these new compressor types. But I never figured out how to reword the old saying to make it work with scroll or especially with screw compressors.
The job has given me the opportunity to work with a lot to great people and organizations in addition to Carrier. I've had a chance to see most of the United States and parts of Europe and Asia. Join Carlyle and see the world! When I started we were mainly a domestic organization and have grown today into a major global manufacturer with compressor questions coming from around the world.
I remember when I started the engineering tools were a lot different from all the computer hardware and software we have today. All our calculations were on slide rules – and don't embarrass me by asking me what one looks like. Considering how crude that seems today I would note that some of our best compressors – like the 5F&H and the 06D – still considered the best in their class – were all designed with slide rules. I also remember my first application project was preparing the first 06D compressor booklet. It has the compressor specifications and compressor performance data. The capacity & power performance data was in curve form and I was excited when they told me I would be using "French curves" to complete the data. You can imagine how disappointed I was to learn they were only curved plastic pieces.
The major portion of my job though, is in working with you – our customers and my fellow Carlyle / Carrier associates in helping to understand how our compressors work and applying them properly. It's something that gave me great satisfaction and enjoyment. It was interesting to me how I could get a total stranger on the phone to accept all my recommendations on some really unusual electrical or mechanical question.
Finally, what I will miss and always remember are the friends and relationships I've developed over the past years. I know it will feel funny next Monday not going to work, but, know that I will still have all the friends I've made over the years. I also wish all of you the best in your careers and lives.
Best Wishes, Paul"
